Every Doppler knife on the Steam Market has the same boring name: Karambit | Doppler (Factory New). Yet one of them costs a nice used car and the one next to it costs a decent gaming PC. The difference is the phase, and Steam will not tell you which one you are looking at. We will.
How Doppler works
Doppler is a candy-paint finish that blends black, red, pink, blue and green in a swirling gradient. It is not one finish but a family of variants. Under the hood, each phase and each gem is its own paint index, which is how bots, inspect tools and serious traders identify them without squinting at screenshots.
- Float range: 0.00 – 0.08, so Doppler only comes in Factory New and Minimal Wear. Float matters a lot less here than color.
- Pattern: the pattern seed shifts where the colors sit, which matters inside a phase (more on that below).
- Name: the market name does not include the phase. Always verify visually or with an inspect link.
Phases 1 to 4
| Phase | Dominant look | Typical market position |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 | Mostly black with pink and red streaks | Entry level, often among the cheapest phases |
| Phase 2 | Pink and purple, bright and loud | Premium phase, usually priced above P1 and P3 |
| Phase 3 | Green and teal tones with darker areas | Usually the cheapest phase |
| Phase 4 | Blue and purple, the coolest-toned phase | The other premium phase; whether P2 or P4 leads depends on the knife |
Exact gaps between phases depend on the knife and on the month. Treat the table as a general shape, not a price list.
Inside a phase: max patterns
Because the pattern seed moves the colors around, two Phase 2 knives can look different. Patterns that push a phase to its extreme, like an almost fully pink Phase 2 or an almost fully blue Phase 4, are traded with their own premium. Phase 1 patterns that lean heavily black have a fan club too. If a listing says “max pink” or “max blue”, check the actual blade.
The gems
Gems are the rare, single-color variants. They drop far less often than the four phases, and they are where Doppler prices go vertical.
- Ruby: a deep, almost solid red. The Infected’s favorite for obvious reasons. Looks like the blade just fed.
- Sapphire: a rich, solid blue. Usually the most expensive classic Doppler gem on a given knife.
- Black Pearl: a dark, smoky blend of black, purple and blue. Moody, rare, and priced well above any regular phase.
Gamma Doppler and the Emerald
Gamma Doppler is a separate finish with a green-and-teal palette. It also has Phases 1 to 4, each with a different balance of green, blue and dark tones. Its gem is the Emerald: a saturated, nearly solid green that sits at the top of the Gamma Doppler price ladder.
Rule of thumb: if the whole blade is one color and the price looks too good, it is either a misread phase or a scam. Inspect it.
How to tell them apart
- Look at the whole blade, both sides. One angle can make a Phase 1 look like a Black Pearl, or a Phase 4 look like a Sapphire.
- Check the dominant color, not the highlights. A few red streaks do not make a Ruby. A gem is wall-to-wall color.
- Use the inspect link. Tools that read the item’s paint index will name the phase directly. No guessing.
- Trust listings that state the phase. On VenomSkins, every Doppler listing names its phase or gem, and the item you receive is the exact one shown.
Pricing logic
Doppler pricing stacks several factors on top of each other:
- Knife type first. A Karambit or Butterfly Phase 3 can outprice a gem on a less popular knife. The base knife sets the floor.
- Phase or gem second. Gems typically trade at a multiple of a regular phase on the same knife. Sometimes a large one.
- Pattern third. Max-color patterns inside a phase add a premium on top.
- Float last. FN usually beats MW, and extreme low floats add a little, but a bad phase with a great float is still a bad phase.
Which phase should you buy?
If you want the Doppler look for the least money, a Phase 3 or Phase 1 on a knife you love is the move. If you want to flex, Phase 2 and Phase 4 are the crowd favorites. If you want to make the server go quiet when you inspect in spawn, save up for a gem. Whatever you pick, buy the specific knife you have seen, not a market name. That is the whole game.
